THE HIV/AIDS FACTOR A total of 33.2 million people now live with HIV/AIDS. 420,000 were under the age of 15. Every day 6,800 people contract HIV—283 every hour. In 2007, 2.1 million people died from AIDS. 290,000 of them were under the age of 15. Africa More than two-thirds (68 percent) of all people living with HIV, 22.5 million, live in Sub-Saharan Africa—including 90 percent of the world’s HIV-positive children. In 2007, an estimated 1.7 million people in the region became newly infected. An estimated 1.6 million adults and children died of AIDS. Zimbabwe Zimbabwe is the worst hit country in Africa. Every 4 in 10 people have AIDS. Life expectancy has dropped to 38 yrs HIV positive child’s life expectancy –7 yrs. A person dies of HIV every minute MORE than 1 in 5 children will be orphaned in 2010. The UN states that at in the next decade approximately 45% of all children in Zimbabwe will be orphaned by AIDS and about half of the children will be HIV positive. In just one province, Masvingo, there are now more than 100,000 AIDS orphans.
